The ecstasy with which some people received and broadcasted the news about President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osibanjo slashing their salaries by 50%, got me wondering at their level of education.
How much do this people really know about Nigeria and its structure?
The truth is that the President did not set his salary, and does not have the right to unilaterally slash same, the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is the only body empowered by the Constitution to determine the salaries, emoluments and estacodes of political office holders. If the President can just order his salaries cut, without deferring to the National Assembly who will now have to debate a bill for such alterations, then it is either he is a lawless President or he is trying to deceive all of us.
Also, assuming the President and his Vice are actually taking a salary cut, like they want us to believe, it still does not contribute a thing to the advancement of this country. The legitimate salaries and allowances of political office holders is insignificant and Nigerians wouldn't mind if it is even raised, while all the leakages through which money is stolen are plugged. No political office holder will be able to maintain the kind of ostentatious lifestyle our politicians maintain, if they don't steal.
The original remuneration of our President which stands at a little above fourteen million Naira is meager and our President will be lying to us if he tells us that he does not spend more than that amount in one day. Fourteen Million Naira is not up to what our President's wife has in her purse for the lesser hajj she is attending in Saudi Arabia, neither are Buhari's relations who have taken over Aso Rock spending less than that amount in their day to day ngwori.
Our President should stop acting this drama and get to work to ensure that he leaves Nigeria better than he met her
